Steelers Receive Important Information Regarding A Trade For Brandon Aiyuk: 'The Market Is Getting More Defined'
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been buzzing with offseason rumors , some of which have materialized into reality. Among the swirling speculations, one particular rumor has captured the hopes of Steelers fans—the potential acquisition of San Francisco 49ers standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk's stellar performance in the 2023 season showcased his pivotal role on one of the league's top teams, making him a coveted asset for numerous franchises. Despite widespread interest, the 49ers appear reluctant to part ways with him, aiming instead to secure a long-term deal.

However, during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL Insider, Ian Rapoport unveiled fresh insights into Aiyuk's situation with the 49ers, offering Steelers fans a clearer understanding of the potential trade scenario.

“If you are trading for Brandon Aiyuk... You know a deal is coming. I don’t know if a deal is going to get done. I know the 49ers would like it. There are definitely other teams interested in paying some draft capital. I know the 49ers would like a one [first round draft pick].”

Rapoport stands as one of the most reliable sources for insider information, earning trust across the league. His suggestion carries weight. He also made it clear that the 49ers really want a first round pick for Aiyuk.

However, he remains uncertain about the 49ers' ability to secure a contract extension with Aiyuk. Nevertheless, he reiterated the numerous reports indicating the 49ers' strong determination to retain Aiyuk by any means possible. Rapoport also made it clear that teams are struggling with the idea of trading a first round pick for Aiyuk.

"I don't know that another team is there yet, but I think the main thing is the market is getting more defined by the day. The DeVonta Smith deal, that's $25 million per year in new money. This one will probably be for the first three years, end up at around $28 [million] per year, new money over the first three years.”

Rapoport emphasized that the wide receiver market is taking shape, influenced by the contracts secured by other star players in the position. He expressed doubt regarding any team's readiness to part with a first-round pick for Aiyuk at the moment.

Acquiring Aiyuk at such a high price would also entail committing to a substantial contract. With the market standards established, it's reasonable to estimate that Aiyuk's acquisition could demand an annual salary of around $25 million for the Steelers. It could also be even more than that.

Steelers’ Omar Khan Is Not Your Grandfather's GM

The jests abound about Omar Khan's departure from the typical Steelers GM mold. This offseason, Steelers fans have witnessed the team's departure from traditional approaches. Contrary to expectations, they were willing to part ways with Kenny Pickett sooner than anticipated. Furthermore, they surprised many by securing not just one, but two quarterbacks in a remarkable deal.

This offseason has taught Steelers fans that Khan operates outside the box, with nothing seemingly off-limits behind closed doors. As draft day approaches, Steelers faithful eagerly anticipate the possibility of a trade for Aiyuk or another wide receiver, remaining vigilant and hopeful.
